The World’s Tallest Christ Statue in Cochabamba, Bolivia

Did you know that the tallest statue of Jesus Christ in the world isn’t in Brazil or Europe—but in Bolivia? Towering over the city of Cochabamba, Cristo de la Concordia holds the title of the largest Christ statue in the world when measured with its pedestal.

Standing on the San Pedro Hill, Cristo de la Concordia reaches a total height of 40.44 meters (132.6 feet), including a 6.24-meter pedestal. The statue alone is 34.20 meters high, making it taller than the famous Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro by over 4 meters.

While other Christ statues like Christ the King in Poland (36 meters) and Christ the Protector in Brazil are also massive, Cristo de la Concordia is often considered the largest overall due to its combined height and the unique feature that visitors can climb inside the statue up to the viewing platform in its head.

A Symbol of Faith and Identity in Bolivia

Unveiled on November 20, 1994, the statue was designed by local Cochabamban sculptors César and Wálter Terrazas Pardo. The idea was inspired by Pope John Paul II’s visit to Cochabamba in 1987, which sparked a wave of religious devotion and civic pride in the region.

Cristo de la Concordia has since become not just a religious icon, but also a powerful symbol of peace, identity, and tourism for Bolivia. The name “Cristo de la Concordia” translates to “Christ of Peace and Harmony,” a fitting tribute for a statue that watches over the city with arms outstretched.

Fun Facts About Cristo de la Concordia

  • The left hand points south, while the right hand points north, making it a kind of spiritual compass.
  • There are over 1,000 steps leading up to the statue, popular among both pilgrims and athletes who use the climb as a physical and spiritual challenge.
  • For those who prefer a more relaxed route, there’s a cable car (teleférico) that takes visitors up San Pedro Hill, offering scenic views of Cochabamba along the way.
  • You can also reach the top by car via a cobblestone road that winds up San Pedro Hill—an ideal option if you’re traveling with family or prefer not to walk.
  • At the top, you’ll also find Patrimonio, a restaurant where you can enjoy a meal or coffee while taking in breathtaking views of the city below.
  • Overall the statue offers panoramic views of Cochabamba and the valley, making the trek worthwhile for tourists and locals alike.

Whether you’re visiting Bolivia for its natural beauty, vibrant culture, or rich history, Cristo de la Concordia is a must-see landmark—and a powerful reminder that the largest expressions of faith can be found in the heart of South America.
